# Creating an Online Exam

> Build an exam with AI instead of writing every question by hand.

Exams are built with an AI assistant rather than a blank form — you describe what you need, and it drafts the questions for you to review.

## Create an exam

1. Go to **[Online Exams](https://www.trackademi.com/en/teacher/online-exams)** in the sidebar.
2. If you don't have any exams yet, click **Create with AI** — or go straight to the **[AI Exam assistant](https://www.trackademi.com/en/teacher/ai/exam)**.
3. In the assistant, tell it what the exam should cover — a topic, a chapter, or a textbook/document you've shared with it — plus how many questions and which question types you want (multiple choice, true/false, short answer, essay, and a few others).
4. The assistant generates a full set of questions. Review them — edit wording, fix answer keys, adjust point values, reorder, or delete anything that isn't right.
5. Save. The exam is created as a **draft** — it isn't visible to students yet.

## Publish it to a class

A draft exam needs two more things before students can take it:

1. **Assign it to one or more classes** — only students actively enrolled in an assigned class can see and take the exam.
2. **Publish it** — change its status from Draft to Published from the exam's edit page.

You can preview exactly what a student will see before publishing, from the exam's **Preview** action.

## Grading

* **Multiple choice, true/false, numeric, and matching questions** are graded automatically the moment a student submits.
* **Short answer and essay questions** are graded by AI in the background, usually within a few minutes of submission — you don't need to grade these by hand. Until grading finishes, the attempt shows as pending.

## Reusing content

If you've already generated an exam covering similar material, you don't need to start from scratch — duplicate it and adjust, or ask the AI assistant to build on an existing set of questions instead of generating an entirely new one.
