# Taking an Online Exam

> What to expect when your teacher assigns an exam.

## Finding an exam

When a teacher publishes an exam to a class you're actively enrolled in, it shows up under that class in your **[Classes](https://www.trackademi.com/en/student/classes)**. Open it to start your attempt.

## While you're taking it

* Depending on how your teacher set it up, you can either move freely between questions, or — for timed exams — answer them in order with a timer on each one.
* Stay on the exam tab. Switching away, minimizing the window, or exiting fullscreen is tracked, and doing it too many times can end your attempt automatically.
* Your answers save as you go.

## Submitting

Submit when you're done (or it submits automatically if time runs out). What happens next depends on the question types:

* **Multiple choice, true/false, numeric, and matching questions** are graded instantly — you may see your score right away, depending on when your teacher allows results to be shown.
* **Short answer and essay questions** are graded by AI shortly after submission, usually within a few minutes. Your attempt shows as pending until that finishes.

## Seeing your result

Depending on your teacher's settings, results are visible immediately after you submit, only after a set date, or not shown at all beyond the grade itself. Once available, your result appears with your **Grades** — see [Grades & Attendance](/en/student/grades-and-attendance).
